Mmmm

I stare at my friend

sitting by my beside

why is she smiling

in such a foolish way

and stroking my hand

as if reassuring a small child

nodding at the passing nurse

in a coded way

mmmm mmm

she mutters something

laughing nervously

my bladder is full

I need to pee

why are you looking at me

as if I were some mad woman

mmmm mm p pee

the nurse arrives with a wheelchair

and I am lifted in

transported past the other beds

filled with limp bodies

mmmm mmm

it becomes a tune

rising and falling

in the bathroom I briefly

catch sight of my face

lips no longer quite meeting

issuing a small river of saliva

wetness on my chin

dampness on my nightgown

I begin to cry

words forming in my head

racing to escape

overloading

I try to force their freedom

mmmmmm
